Only 151% of nurses say they want to continue working where they are

Study proves that only 1/3 of professionals believe they have the ideal amount of time for patient care, a reduction of 10 percentage points since 2021

According to the research highlighted in the report 2023 Survey of Registered Nurses: The Pandemic's Consequences, carried out with 18,000 nurses in the United States, nursing has been facing a deep crisis, impacted by increased stress, decreased job satisfaction and an alarming turnover rate.

In this post, we will explore these challenges and demonstrate how digitalizing communication for nurses can be a viable and immediate solution for your hospital.

Change in Employment Status and Job Satisfaction

According to the study, only 151% of hospital nurses plan to remain in their current positions in the next year, indicating a significant intention to change jobs or leave the sector. This finding may reflect significant malaise in the current work environment and a clear need for action to reverse this trend.

Satisfaction with the work performed

The percentage of nurses satisfied with the quality of care they provide in their current job decreased 11 points from 2021, from 75% to 64% in 2023. Compared to more experienced nurses, younger nurses are significantly less satisfied with their careers and jobs, and are less likely to encourage others to become nurses.

Time with Patients: An Increasingly Scarce Resource

Another critical point is the reduction in the amount of time that nurses feel they can dedicate to their patients. The study shows that only 1/3 of professionals believe they have the ideal amount of time for care, a reduction of 10 percentage points since 2021. This aspect not only affects the quality of care but also the job satisfaction of nurses.

How Digitalization of Communication Can Help

The adoption of digital technologies in communication can be a key to relieving stress, improving the quality of the work environment and reducing high turnover. Digitalization allows:

  1. More Time Efficiency: Automating administrative tasks frees nurses to focus on direct patient care, improving quality of care and job satisfaction.
  2. Stress Reduction: Technology can facilitate more efficient communication within the healthcare team, reducing misunderstandings and the stress burden related to communication problems.
  3. Greater Retention of Professionals: Work environments where technology supports nurses’ work tend to be more attractive, contributing to talent retention.

The challenge faced by nursing is multifaceted and requires integrated actions. The digitalization of communication presents itself as a promising solution, capable of simultaneously addressing several of the problems highlighted by the study.
